Holiday Shoppers Are Watching Your Values
Black Friday used to be a simple equation: whoever cuts the deepest discount wins the cart. However, new
data from Givsly and CivicScience suggests that equation is changing.
In a new study on 2026 holiday shopping behavior, we found that 64% of U.S. adults now consider whether a brand aligns with a gift recipient's values before buying — and more than a third do it "always" or "often." This isn't a fringe audience anymore. It's become mainstream holiday shopper.
A few numbers that stood out
Early shoppers are your most values-driven audience. Consumers who start their holiday shopping before Thanksgiving are nearly twice as likely to say a brand's social consciousness is "very important" compared to last-minute December shoppers. If your values-based campaign is launching in December, you may already be too late for your most receptive audience.
Checkout-integrated giving isn't just good PR — it moves the needle. 34% of shoppers say a round-up or matched-giving option at checkout makes a gift feel more meaningful, versus just 9% who say it makes it feel less meaningful. That's more than a 3-to-1 margin in favor — a real, quantifiable lift, not just a brand-image play.
The values-driven shopper is younger than you'd think. Adults aged 18–44 make up 55% of all values-driven holiday shoppers — more than double any other age group. This is a reachable, digitally native audience, not an aging niche.
And the trend is accelerating, not fading. 41% of U.S. adults expect to weigh brand values more heavily in 2027, compared to just 10% who expect to weigh it less. Momentum is building toward next year, not away from it.
Why this matters for brands and agencies right now
Holiday shopping has always been a battle for attention and margin. What this data shows is that values have quietly become a third lever — alongside price and convenience — that shoppers are using to decide where their gift dollars go. Brands that treat values-based messaging as an afterthought, or save it for December, are leaving engagement (and meaning) on the table with the shoppers who are paying attention the most.
